Above is a photo lifted from our annual of Bobby Kenny and me (Mike Tripp) running
low hurdles. (Note: Bobby's good form vs. mine going over the hurdle.)

Coach McCauley noted that Bobby and I took two extra steps between
hurdles and he advised us that we were losing time because of it. He'd
already taught us to get low over the hurdles in order to get back down
on the track quicker. As you can see Bobby learned. I thought I had too
until I saw this picture after it was made.

Coach suggested that we take longer strides and alternate our leading
leg as we approached the next hurdle. It sounded logical but I lacked
the discipline to make myself do it. Bobby picked up on it and practiced
 it until it became natural. The results;
Bobby consistently placed in every meet. Me? I did well to finish 3rd in
 all our meets.

This picture (above) has been a reminder to me to apply what I learn in life by
practicing until it becomes second nature.
Don't be afraid to make mistakes or ashamed of
them. We should learn from them; pick ourselves up and try again

No I'm still not perfect but I am a work in progress and God isn't through

with me yet but He expects my best efforts.

.p.s. Bobby wanted individual pictures made but Coach McCauley nixed
that. I'm glad because I needed to see how bad I looked beside Bobby
Thanks Coach McCauley

Trippin' Out with Wanda and Wilma - Mike's technique has improved!

Gotta' tell you another track tale:  Scotty and Doug were our quick guys.
At a meet we were running at Farrington Field one sunny day
(seems like most of our meets were in rain), Scotty was running
in a sprint heat and was way out in front when he started screaming
to Coach McCauley "I can't see, I can't see Coach!" Coach yelled
back "Open your eyes Scotty; open your eyes!" Scotty had tensed
up so much he had clinched his eyes shut while blowing down the track.

Doug, like his older brother Robert was trained by his Dad while growing
up and kinda' put more stock in Dad's regime than Coach's but it was
hard to argue with success. Well back at George Clarke elementary he was
the fastest guy. Fact is he was so fast he could gallop instead of run and
that was how he ran until...I don't know. Anyway by PHS days he sprinted.
BUT back then there was one person at George Clarke who could push
Doug so he would sprint but that's another story for another time.

This is a warning: If you don't start sending stuff into our web site I will
begin to tell some stories about you and I may have to embarrass you.......Mike Tripp Archives
